Number plates
|
|
|
Significant preparation was
undertaken during the year for the introduction
on 1 September 2001 of changes for number
plates. On that date a new format for
registration marks will be introduced as well as
new rules regulating the display and
construction of the plates. Together these
measures will make number plates easier and
clearer to remember, thereby contributing to
road safety. |
|
|
The new registration mark
will comprise seven characters, as illustrated
above. The first two letters show where the
vehicle was registered - the local memory tag.
The two numbers indicate the age of the vehicle,
and as now there will be two changes in a year.
The last three letters, randomly selected, give
a unique identity to a vehicle. |
|
Plates manufactured from 1
September 2001 must display the mandatory font
together with the British Standard number (BS AU
145d), the name and trade mark of the plate
maker and the name and postcode of the supply
outlet. In addition, there will be the option to
display the EU symbol. This includes our
national identification letters (GB). |
|
Where the font on the existing plate is
substantially similar to the mandatory font
there will be no need to change it. However,
where plates have stylised letters and figures,
or use fixing bolts to alter the appearance of
the letters or numbers, a new plate will be
required.
